There are papers that are staples in my studio. They help me in making the art that I do, but I have always loved them for what they are in their own right. Recently I started using them as the materials themselves rather than as aids to more “substantial works” which involve aluminum, wax, heat, etc. The goal was to explore variation using this simple material. I like that by folding the paper on itself another subtle color is created. Many of the papers are translucent, which gave more possibilities. The black squares of paper are painted with sumi ink that I grind myself. The beauty of this is that I can control the density of the blackness…and it smells incredibly wonderful as it’s ground on a stone dish, something similar to a mortar.
