a variety of things...
Mixed emotions: I'm currently working on a commission for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dubai. While I'm pleased with the way the painting is going and grateful for the commission (especially in this economy) the timeline of this project will necessitate that I ship it as soon as it's finished. I really like to sit with a piece for awhile after it's done, to consider it. That part I'll miss.
On a positive note:
"More that half a century of artists' meditations on art history's most elemental form" at Pace Wildenstein, 32 E 57th St, through February 13.
"The exhibition features sculptures and paintings by 16 artists, including Josef Albers, Tara Donovan, Tony Feher, Dan
Flavin, Alfred Jensen, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Agnes Martin, Louise Nevelson, Ad Reinhardt,
Lucas Samaras, Joel Shapiro, James Siena, Keith Tyson, and Corban Walker."

Postcard Race, cont'd
Nearly half the cards are back. I'm so pleased with this level of response. What great racers I have on my mailing list!! Fastest speed so far: 24.4 mph
I'm shooting video of all stages of this project, hope to post a bit of that in a few...

The Postcard Race has begun! On Nov 4, at 4:40 pm I mailed 100 postcards, asking the recipients to mail them back to me. As they return I calculate the mph that the card traveled from Nov 4 at 4:40 until the moment I receive it. I will create an installation of the cards using their speed as a distinguishing factor within the installation. So far speeds as great as .168 mph have been achieved!!

New series launched: Calculated Perception

Calculated Perception, 8 Forms
Each of the above is 8in x 5.5in, wax on paper, 2009 *
By comparing a range of mathematically determined divisions of a surface I find that some generate a sense of aesthetic balance while others do not. I’m interested in the differences of perceived and calculated balance created by these divisions.
Each painting in this new series uses one of three medium parings: wax on paper, graphite and gold leaf on acetate, and wax and eggshell on aluminum. Distinguished by the medium pairing, each painting offers a factor in comparing balance and division.
"Calculated Perception" builds upon a past series (“Measuring Parallels”) where the surface division was in two equal parts and the equality of the parts was intentionally disguised.
*3rd & 6th paintings (above) are divided into halves, by color, the remainder are divided by thirds, (i.e. 2:3,1:3).

My favorite art in Chelsea right now

Betty Cuningham Gallery offers a group exhibition, titled Core, featuring works by Jake Berthot, Forrest Bess, Alfonso Fratteggiani Bianchi, Suzan Frecon, John Lees, Robert Therrien, Alison Wilding and Christopher Wilmarth, from March 19 through May 2, 2009 at 541 West 25th Street, New York City.
The work for this exhibition was selected with the directive of finding a mysterious, psychological or personal center. “Core” refers to the center, the soul or the heart (as in French “Coeur”).
I'm particularly fond of Bianchi's pigment on limestone pieces, pictured above (at Charlotte Jackson in NM). The colors and surfaces are beyond belief.

Upcoming Exhibition

Calculating Art: Mathematics in the Visual Field
This exhibition looks at art that uses mathematics in some way as part of the creative process. It will open on September 4th at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJDr. Virginia Butera, director of the Maloney Gallery and curator of this exhibition reviewed 400 objects and selected 34 to represent this concept. Opening reception is from 4:30 - 7pm on September 4th. The gallery is open Mon-Fri 1-7pm, Sat 1-4pm or call 937-290-4315 to schedule an alternate time. The exhibition closes on October 8th. I will attend the Closing reception and lecture on Oct 7th, 7pm. The campus is located at 2 Convent Road, Morristown, NJ 07960 and the gallery is located within the Annunciation Center.
The work shown above, Measuring Parallels #4, is part of an ongoing series where I calculate the total surface area of the panel, covering 50% with eggshell inlay, the other 50% with encaustic paint. I often look for ways to visually subvert the actual balance of this division by the placement or configuration of the two areas.

Radiance from the Rain Forest: Featherwork in Ancient Peru
An amazing exhibition of artworks created with feathers is on display through September 1st at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The pieces in the show that are non-representational, dating from the 6th & 7th centuries, have a modern sensibility and a minimal elegance. I love the simple materials used, used in repetition, to create a dynamic overall surface.
